What Love Is

1 John 4:7-8

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

What Love Is

I had the privilege of being involved with a youth ministry when I was much, much younger.  We traveled on mission trips and worked in soup kitchens and in youth detention centers.  I pray that those young people(who are now in their thirties) found lives that are spiritually fulfilling.

I learned a lot of scripture songs with that experience.  Today's verse was one.  Some of you may be humming the tune that was set to these two lines now.

I've always been struck by the sheer amount of love in the passage.  BeLOVEd, let us LOVE one another....for LOVE is of God....every one that LOVEth....He that LOVEth not...for God isLOVE....that's alot of love.

And we know that God so LOVED us that He gave His only begotten Son for us, as the perfect sacrifice for an amount of sin that could not be reconciled any other way.

So, just as a thought of encouragement.  Whether you are spending this Valentine season wrapped in the arms of the love of your life, or drifting on the memory/wish of one, remember, no one, not any living human, loves you as much as God loves you.  No one, not any breathing human, put breath in your lungs, blood in your body, a beat in your heart.  Few would die for you.  Fewer still would die for something you did wrong.  None would give all on the hope that you would accept. One did all.

Not enough?  Then just ponder on the verse above.  Meditate a bit on John 3:16.  Mull over the thought of Hebrews 13:5-6 in that you are never alone, forsaken and have nothing to fear.

God is what love is.  We get to love by Jesus.  We act in love following after the Holy Spirit.

John 14:25-31

25 These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.
26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
27 Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
28 Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
29 And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe.
30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.
31 But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do. Arise, let us go hence.

The Peace of Christ to you.
